The School District of Palm Beach County celebrated the accomplishments of eighty-five schools Wednesday, which included ECMS.

The schools are recipients of the Five Star Award, a distinction recognized by the Florida Department of Education for exemplary community involvement.

Recipients of the Five Star School Award received a certificate, a flag and the prestige of the highest possible rating from the Department of Education.

To earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show documentation that it has achieved 100 percent of the established criteria in the following categories.

Business partnerships
Family Involvement
Student Community Service
School Advisory Councils
Schools must also earn a grade of C or above, or school improvement rating of “maintaining or improving” for the year of nomination.

Debi Elfen, volunteer program coordinator for the School District of Palm Beach County oversees the program, she is retiring after 21 years. Elfen says she is always in awe by what the schools can accomplish.

“Becoming a Five Star School is no easy task. It requires organization, eagerness, and passion,” Elfen said. “These schools understand the value of volunteers and community involvement, they are the true stars of our communities.”
